Dhaka sweats through hottest day of the season

Update : 23 May 2015, 07:39 PM

Residents of the nation’s capital yesterday experienced the highest temperature recorded in Dhaka this season as the mercury touched 36.4 degrees Celsius, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

On April 24 last year, the capital city endured a fifty-three year high of 40.2 degrees Celsius.

The country’s highest temperature of the day, recorded in Rajshahi, was 39 degrees Celsius while the highest temperature of the season – 39.8 degrees Celsius – was recorded at Chuadanga on Friday.

The last few days has seen a moderate heatwave sweep across the country that will continue for several more days, said Bazlur Rashid, a meteorologist at the Met Office.

Rainfall is expected in two or three days in Chittagong, Sylhet, Tangail and Mymensingh, and could possibly have a cooling effect, he added.

City residents stayed out of the heat and remained indoors during the day.

The searing heatwave that started last month has affected vast swathes of the country, causing heat-related sicknesses and sending people to hospitals.
