DMCH: Garo woman was gang-raped

Update : 23 May 2015, 06:52 PM

Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) doctors yesterday confirmed that an indigenous woman sexually assaulted on a moving micro-bus had been gang-raped by her attackers.

The victim underwent forensic testing at the One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC). The 21-year-old Garo woman was gang-raped by five unidentified men on Thursday night in the capital’s Kuril area, according to the statement of the case lodged on Friday.

Professor Dr Mumtaz Ara conducted the examination and found evidence of gang rape, the head of the forensics department, Professor Habibuzzaman, said. The examiner had found evidence of rape by several people.

He said: “The examiner collected samples and took x-rays. Doctors will need the report to be certain of the findings. The final report will be released once the age of the girl is confirmed. “It will take seven days.” Investigators said no arrests had yet been made in the case.

Bhatara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nurul Muttakim said the case, which has been prioritised, was being investigated. “The police will do its best to arrest the culprits quickly.”

The OC said because the assailants were not known to the victim, finding them will be difficult. He said since the shop at Jamuna Future Park where the woman worked did not have CCTV cameras, the police do not have any clues about the assailants.

Every spot visited by the moving vehicle during the rape will be investigated. Footage from CCTV cameras found on the route will be studied for clues, he added.

The Dhaka Tribune DMCH correspondent confirmed that the victim had been admitted to the gynaecology department at the hospital around 2pm and was transferred to the OCC around 7:20pm yesterday.

Inspector (Investigation) Sazzad Hossain of Bhatara police on Friday said the police would take action after receiving the medical report.
