Update : 22 May 2015, 09:09 PM

Stating that the country’s 67% people are now getting power, Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday vowed that all the people in the country would have access to the power connection network by 2021.

“We are generating power as per the necessity and the country has no power crisis at this moment. But power generation needs to be increased to meet new demand,” he said while inaugurating the newly-built office building of Gram Samiti under the initiative of Social Development Foundation (SDF) at Dholoipara in Sylhet.

Terming natural gas as a valuable resource, the finance minister said: “Factories operate by gas, so no one will get new gas connection.”

Referring to the government’s different initiative to cut poverty, Muhith said SDF project was a successful one for eliminating poverty and its activities would run for another six years in the country.

Mentioning present poverty rate is 24%, he said: “The government has various initiatives to rehabilitate beggars, “but now those who are begging, they have chosen it as a profession willingly, no one can motivate them to change the profession.”

Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet M Shahidul Islam chaired the programme while SDF Managing Director A Z M Sakhawat Hossain gave welcome speech.
