The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) yesterday allocated Tk468 crore to beef up the Coast Guard, as the Asian human trafficking crisis continued to grab international headlines.
The force will procure three in-shore patrol vessels, six high-speed boats and one floating crane under the upgrade project.
After the Ecnec meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters the recent rise in human trafficking prompted the government to take up the project.
“The move will help strengthen Coast Guard surveillance of the country’s inland waters and maritime boundary,” he said.
Ecnec yesterday also approved eight development projects valued at Tk1,591 crore.
