Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has declared Tk1 lakh bounty for help in the capture of eight people who were involved in the sexual assaults of some women during the Pohela Boishak celebration.
Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Haque announced the reward in a press conference held at police headquarters in the capital on Sunday morning.
He said: “We have identified eight wrongdoers after analysing the video footage of the CCTV cameras at Dhaka University. We do not have any information about the whereabouts of these eight people.
"Their images will be released in the media and whoever provides information about them will be given Tk1 lakh.”
The IGP also assured the safety of the people who will provide information about the sex offenders.
At least 20 women were reported to have been sexually assaulted while returning home after celebrating Pohela Boishakh on the DU campus.
The sexual assaults of the women continued there even though police personnel were on duty nearby. Some of the offenders were handed over to police but they were later released.
Initially police denied negligence while on duty at the campus.
However, the police probe committee formed to look into the police role during the harrassment, finally found three policemen responsible for neglecting their duties.
Committee Member Secretary and DB Police Deputy Commissioner Jahangir Hossain Matubbor submitted the report to DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah on May 7.
