Businessman killed in Noakhali fire

A diesel businessman has been killed in a fire at his shop at Chaprashirhat under Kabirhat upazila in Noakhali.

Seven shops were gutted in the fire incident on early Saturday.

The deceased is Abdul Halim, 70, of village Char Fakira.

Mukter Ali, officer-in-charge of Kabirhat police, said passersby noticed smoke coming out from a shop while they were going to say their prayers around 4am.

"Then they tried to douse fire by collecting water locally. On information, a fire unit came from Companiganj and took the fire under control. By this time Abdul Halim burnt alive," said the OC.

Senior fire officer Faruk Hasan said the fire might have been originated from electric shot circuit of a diesel selling shop.

Police handed over the body to his relatives.

Affected shop owners claimed that the estimated loss from the fire was Tk30 lakh.
