Commuters panic as two inter-city trains escape accidents

Update : 12 May 2015, 07:23 PM

Two separate Sylhet-bound inter-city trains in two consecutive days narrowly escaped major accidents in Moulvibazar district.

Several passengers received injuries on Monday night when they jumped off the inter-city train at Shamshernagar railway station as the train skipped its scheduled stop there.

The injured passengers however could not be identified. The incident took place after 28 hours of another inter-city train Jayantika losing its four compartments on its way to Sylhet from Dhaka.

These incidents caused panic among the commuters on this route.

According to Abdul Aziz, station master of Shamshernagor railway station, said the incident took place around 11:50pm on Monday night.  “The train was passing through the station at a speed of 20-30km.  Since it made a stop at Kulaura station, it did not stop here. The Shamshernagar passengers were supposed to get down at Kulaura.”

“But the passengers did not realise it and they tried to jump off the train when it was going through Shamshernagar station,” he said.

Abdul Aziz further said there could have been a major accident as Dhaka-bound Upaban Express was at the station waiting for crossing at that time.

“Upaban usually makes the crossing at Shamshernagar. There could have been a collision if it had gone for the crossing last night,” the station master added. Earlier on Sunday, four bogeys of the Sylhet-bound inter-city Jayantika Express got detached when it was going up through Lawachhara forest. The separated bogeys came down the track for 3km and stopped at Shaplabag area near at Sreemangal railway station. A four member investigating committee was formed.
