38kg gold seized at Chittagong airport

Customs officials have seized 325 gold bars weighing around 38kg in separate drives from Hazrat Shah Amanat International airport.

Md Selim Reza, an assistant commissioner of Chittagong Customs House, said: “Acting on a tip-off, the officials recovered 288 gold bars in an abandoned condition from a toilet in the airport around 7am Tuesday.”

Later, in another drive, the officials seized 27 bars from a passenger who came from Dubai by a flight of Bangladesh Biman.

However, the identity of the passenger could not be ascertained immediately.

He said the price of the gold is Tk16.25 crore.

“The drive is still on. The details of the drive will be disclosed later,” the official added.

Under the existing Passenger (non-tourists) Baggage Rule, a passenger can bring up to 200 grams (about 17 tola) of gold ornament as duty-free. The passenger also can bring another 200 grams of gold bar on payment of Tk150 specific duty for each tola.
