Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul has been suspended following the framing of charges against him in several cases, including one for the murder of police constable Siddhartha Sarker.
The Local Government Division (LGD) yesterday issued a notification regarding the suspension of the pro-BNP mayor who has been in prison for several lawsuits.
According to section 12 (1) of the City Corporation Act, “if charge sheet is accepted by court against any city corporation mayor and councillor, the government has right to suspend him or her in consultation with the Election Commission.”
When contacted, LGD Senior Assistant Secretary Jasim Uddin Hawlader told the Dhaka Tribune that Bulbul had been removed from his post as per the aforesaid section.
Earlier, the government suspended another pro-BNP Sylhet Mayor Ariful Haque Choudhury on the same grounds.
On September 18, 2013, Bulbul started serving as the mayor of Rajshahi.
