Yesterday marked the anniversary of Awami League President and present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s return home after a ban on her return during the state of emergency in the country in 2007-2008.
The then military-backed caretaker government put the ban on Hasina’s return to Bangladesh in April 2007, when she was visiting the US for treatment, stating that her return would create disorder in the country.
The ban was lifted a few days later and she was able to return home on May 7, 2007, received with a warm welcome by the leaders and workers of her party and its associate bodies, as well as many of her followers.
In observance of the day, Awami Swechchasebak League organised a public rally in front of Awami League’s central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.
Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif attended the rally as chief guest.
