Update : 03 May 2015, 07:12 AM

Former BNP lawmaker Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu has died of cardiac arrest at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Confirming the death, Rajpara police OC Mehedi Hasan told the Dhaka Tribune: "I have heard that Pintu was taken to the hospital around 12:15pm where on-duty doctors declared him dead."

Earlier, RMCH Director AKM Nasir Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune that Pintu was taken to the hospital with chest pain at around 9am.

"Later, he was shifted to the Cardiac department around 12 noon where he died while undergoing treatment," he said.

Pintu was a life convict in the BDR carnage case.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia expressed deep shock at the death of the former lawmaker.

The BNP leader had collected a nomination form to join the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayoral race. However, the Election Commission cancelled his nomination paper as as he was a convict in the BDR carnage case.

On November 5, 2013, Pintu was awarded life-term imprisonment for his involvement in the BDR carnage in 2009.

The court also fined him Tk500,000. Later in January 2014, the convict filed an appeal with the High Court, challenging his conviction in the BDR carnage case.
