Update : 02 May 2015, 07:41 PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate six power projects through video conference at her official residence Gano Bhaban today.

Of those, four plants have been built by independent power producers – 50.20MW furnace oil-based plant in Natore, 102MW in Narayanganj, 52.50MW in Munshiganj and gas-based 108MW in Narsingdi.

The plant in Natore has been operating since January 24 last year while the one in Narayanganj since June 9 of that year.

The plant in Narsingdi has been in production since July 16, 2014, and the one in Munshiganj since February 20 this year.

Another two projects include a high-voltage 400KV transmission line from Meghnaghat to Aminbazar under state-owned Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited  (PGCB) which has been operating since June 28 last year and a 132/33/11KV power substation in Lalbagh under sate-owned Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC) operating since May 29 of that year.

“The government has taken a range of initiatives to increase power generation, transmission and distribution capacity for electricity supply across the country,” State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Nasrul Hamid, told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

The four plants will add 314.7MW electricity in the national grid.

PGCB has completed the installation of the 53km line from Meghnaghat to Aminbazar aimed at supplying uninterrupted power to the capital.

Meanwhile, the DPDC installed the substation in the city to improve  power supply.

Besides, construction of some 13 more power plants will begin next year and the government has taken initiatives to introduce prepaid meters across the country with a view to reducing system loss and measuring demand.

Power generation reached 13,265MW, including captive generation, from 3,268MW in 2009 and the government has prioritised the development of the sector considering its importance in the overall development of the country.

The government has a target to generate 20,000MW electricity as part of the objective to supply power to all citizens within 2021.
