Three cops shot during clash between councilor contestant supporters

At least 13 people including three policemen were injured in a post-election clash between two groups of ruling Awami League (AL) men at Shershah area in Chittagong city yesterday afternoon.

The injured law enforcers – Sub Inspector Sayem, Assistant Sub Inspector Sanjib of Bayezid Police Station and Constable Manik of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Line – were admitted at Chittagong Medical College Hospital with stray bullet injuries, police said.

The injured locals were given primary treatment in different private hospitals at the area, police added.

Eyewitnesses said several hundred AL men of Chittagong Polytechnic Institute area, led by AL leader Mehedi and Mohiuddin and equipped with firearms, sticks, rods and other weapons, tried to attack the house of local Jubo league leader Elias around 1:30pm.

Elias’s followers also came together and chased the attackers, said Bayezid Police Station Officer-in-Charge Babul Chandra Banik.

He said on information, police rushed to the spot, took position in the middle and fired at least 20 shotgun rounds. The attackers also opened fire and shot at least 15 bullets leaving three police and 10 locals injured.

The clash broke out between supporters of BNP-backed councilor aspirant Mahbubul Alam, brother of AL leader Elias, and AL-backed councilor aspirant Farid Ahmed Chowdhury, friend of Mehedi, over the election.

On Wednesday night, Elias and his associates allegedly attacked Mehedi’s house and shot around 15 bullets. Mehedi yesterday tried to retaliate by attacking Elias’s house, police said.

The clash ended around 2:30pm, said the OC adding that necessary legal actions would be taken.

Both the groups are followers of newly elected Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin who is general secretary of Chittagong city unit of AL.
