Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) scientist and eminent plant breeder, Dr Mirza Mofazzal Islam, was honoured with the “Outstanding Achievement Awards” during the 58th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna on Wednesday.
The award, jointly conferred by IAEA and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, was one of the five in these categories to appreciate teams of scientists who have contributed to increased food security by using radiation to breed better crop varieties.
IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano handed over the award to the representative of Bangladesh Government during the programme.
Confirming the award, Dr Mofazzel said: “Foreign Ministry source informed me Friday night about the award.”
Dr Islam got the recognition for his success in releasing nine improved mutant varieties of fibre jute, vegetable jute, mung bean and chickpea. He has developed sixteen crop varieties so far using the technique of mutation breeding.
