Bumper production of sugarcane expected in Rangpur zone

Update : 06 Nov 2013, 07:58 PM

A bumper production of sugarcane is expected at the eight sub-zones of Rangpur Sugar Mills Limited (RSML) as the sugarcane saplings have grown well in the fields.

Around 5,500 farmers of the sub-zones have cultivated sugarcane on a total of 7,040 acres of land, officials said.

Zinnat Ali Prodhan, president of Sugarcane Growers’ Association of the mill, said favourable climatic condition, timely supply of high quality seed, fertilisers, and insecticides and other agri-inputs and proper disbursement of subsidy and agri-loan to the growers were the main reasons behind the expectation of a bumper production, reports BSS.

Though the RSML went to sugar production every year, it was not operated as per expected time due to lack of supply of required quantity of sugarcane from the mill zone areas, causing losses for years.

To run the mill properly and to turn it into a profitable firm in near future, the authorities concerned took many initiatives including high quality seed distribution, subsidy, and loan disbursement on easy terms for the growers.

Besides, officials and staff of the mill conducted different motivational and monitoring programmes for the farmers of the mill zones during the plantation season to bring more land under sugarcane farming to attain the goal.

According to sources, over 1,500 acres of land were brought under sugarcane cultivation in the 2012-13 plantation season compared to the previous season and it was possible due to the pragmatic measures taken by the mill authorities.

Managing Director of the RSML Abdul Khaleque said around 125,700 tonnes of yields might be produced.
