State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam emphasized the importance of revitalizing Bangladesh’s jute sector, underlining its deep connection to the nation’s heritage, culture, and daily life.
Speaking during an inspection of the Textile Vocational Institute project in Pirojpur on Saturday, he outlined government plans to reopen closed jute mills and diversify jute-based products to create employment opportunities.
“We have already taken steps to increase jute and jute seed production, reopen closed mills, and generate new job opportunities,” the State Minister said.
Md. Shariful Alam also highlighted efforts to promote jute as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic. “In 2001, the then-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia banned plastic. Building on that initiative, we are raising public awareness against plastic use and encouraging jute-based alternatives. Measures are underway to introduce jute products for essential items across various government offices,” he added.
The visit was attended by Bilkis Jahan Remi, Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute; Zahid Hossain, Joint Secretary; Sadat Apu Sayem, Project Director; Md. Shahidul Islam, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department in Pirojpur; as well as Monir Hossain Akon, General Secretary of BNP in Bhandaria Upazila Abdul Mannan Howlader, Convener of Pirojpur Municipality BNP and other leaders from BNP and affiliated organizations.
