Farmers have participated in a day-long field day to exhibit their technique in producing pearls from farming freshwater oysters to people from all walks of life in Naogaon.

The exhibition was organized by a local non-governmental organization named Moushumi with assistance from the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) in the Ataiukula area of Raninagar Upazila on Tuesday.

It was organized under a sub-project titled Rural Microenterprise Transformation Project (RMTP) aiming at the production and marketing of safe fish and fisheries products.

To mark the event, the farmers collected 2,000 oysters from their freshwater farms.

PKSF’s RMTP project coordinator Md Habibur Rahman was present on the occasion as the chief guest.

District Fisheries Officer Ferous Ali and Upazila Fisheries Officer Palash Kumar Debnath, among others, were also present.

The guests spoke on the occasion and shed light on the possibility of pearl farming in the region. They also said that this farming technique is profitable and therefore farmers are now becoming more interested in pearl alongside fish farming.

They added that the demand for these pears is growing around the world and as a result, the country will be able to earn a huge amount of foreign currency through pearl export in the near future.

Speakers highlighted that pearls can be cultivated at any water body around the household.
