Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin has said the government is committed to establishing resilient agro-based industries that can withstand the impacts of climate change.
He made the remarks during a meeting on Wednesday at a hotel in Dhaka.
The minister said: "Our emphasis on research and technological innovations for agriculture and renewable energy is crucial in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change."
"Incorporating agroforestry practices into our agricultural landscape can promote resilience and sustainability while addressing climate change challenges," he added.
Shahab Uddin said: "We must collaborate closely with the private sector, civil society and international development partners to achieve our climate adaptation goals. I call upon all stakeholders to join hands and explore innovative partnerships to drive sustainable growth and development in our agro-based industries."
The environment minister said the National Adaptation Plan emphasizes the importance of private sector engagement in agriculture and food systems, research and technological innovations for agriculture and renewable energy, agroforestry, agro-met forecasting and resilient infrastructure.
One of the identified adaptation actions in NAP is the development of agro-food processing industries based on climate-sensitive crop zoning.
"This initiative will enable us to make informed decisions in selecting suitable crops for specific regions, considering the changing climate patterns, and ensuring food security for our nation. By establishing such industries, we can create employment opportunities and add value to our agricultural products, thus strengthening our economy," he added.
Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque was present as chief guest.
