Farmers in Kushtia were successful in cultivating watermelon this summer.

They are getting interested in watermelon cultivation as they are earning more profit by cultivating early-season summer watermelon as per the advice of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).

According to the DAE, summer watermelons of different colors have been cultivated in the current season on 10 hectares of land.

After spending about Tk40,000-Tk50,000 on watermelon cultivation per bigha land, farmers are earning profits of around Tk80,000 in return.

Nasir Uddin, farmer of Shashidharpur village of Daulatpur upazila, said that he made a lot of profit by cultivating summer watermelon this year.

“I earned about Tk100,000, excluding expenses, from one bigha land,” he added.

Another young man named Samrat from the Daulatpur DAE Office took a demonstration plot for watermelon cultivation on a 15th-century land.

“By spending only Tk15,000, I sold watermelons worth about Tk50,000. Many farmers became interested in watermelon cultivation after seeing me,” he added.

Daulatpur DAE officer Nurul Islam said: “As farmers are getting more interested in watermelon cultivation, the DAE is also giving them all the support and advice they need.”
