Two people were killed and eight others injured after a boundary wall of Mirpur University College collapsed on people waiting in line to buy Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) goods in the capital's Mirpur area on Tuesday.
The incident occurred around 1:30pm, according to police.
Mirpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman said an old section of the college's boundary wall collapsed without warning.
"Two people who came to buy TCB goods were killed. The injured have been rescued and admitted to hospitals, where they are undergoing treatment," he said.
One of the deceased was identified as Nasima Begum, a resident of the Janata Housing area in Mirpur-2. The identity of the other victim could not be confirmed immediately.
According to Mirpur Model Police Station, people had been queuing beside the college's boundary wall since the morning to purchase TCB goods when a section of the old wall suddenly gave way.
Several people in the queue were trapped under the debris and sustained serious injuries, with some suffering crush injuries to their faces and legs.
Rescuers recovered the injured and took them to different hospitals for treatment. Police have so far confirmed two deaths.
