It was relatively unknown, until recently, that Indian drug addicts are a huge fan of the Tk2 note - not for its beautiful design, but for its durability. In fact, its demand is so high that many people are specifically smuggling this note into India, where it fetches a price up to three times higher.
The unique usage of the note was unearthed recently after law enforcers arrested two Indians with a huge amount of Tk2 notes at Benapole port. The men said they had been smuggling this particular note for some time now as it was very popular among drug addicts in India.
Sources said drug addicts used this note to make pipes for inhaling smoke from Yaba and Heroin.
It is believed that smugglers sell Tk2 notes for Rs5 each (around Tk6).
Several Bangladeshi heroin and Yaba consumers told the Dhaka Tribune they had used cigarette packets to make pipes to inhale smoke. But this paper burnt so quickly that they needed to make several pipes during a single session.
“A Bangladeshi Tk2 note is more durable. A pipe made from it can be used several times,” said one user. "Durability has made the note popular among junkies in Bangladesh and India."
When asked about the smuggling of the note and its use in drug consumption, Benapole BGB Camp Nayeb Subedar Nazrul Islam said they were not aware about the particular usage.
"We don't want our money to be smuggled. We are doing everything we can to stop it."
