A new passenger train service between Bangladesh's southern district Khulna and West Bengal capital Kolkata will begin in the first half of the next year, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque has said.
The minister made the disclosure while inaugurating the fourth trip of Maitree Express train between Dhaka and Kolkata at Cantonment railway station on Saturday morning.
“Maitree Express has gained huge popularity among the passengers of the two neighbouring countries. So, we have opened another trip,” Mujibul said.
“Even, we will be reconnecting Khulna-Kolkata train again in the first half of the next year following the agreement between the two countries.”
The new trip will depart from Dhaka cantonment station at 8:10am in every Saturday of the week and begin its journey from Kolkata on Friday.
Due to India-Pakistan War in 1965, the Dhaka-Kolkata train service was snapped and the service reopened in April 2008.
