Ex-diplomat Momen: Countries with climate change, migrant factors to be affected

Update : 10 Nov 2016, 01:31 AM
Although Dr Momen has greeted celebrity business tycoon Donald Trump on his victory as the 45th president of the United States of America, he believes that Trump will not ever think about the global crisis during his presidency. The Bangladeshi diplomat was expressing his instant reaction over the victory of Trump while talking to the Dhaka Tribune at his residence in the city yesterday. He said: “Low income countries like Bangladesh might be more affected in getting the average amount of fund from the United Nations for the development of women and children because of Donald Trump’s negative attitude towards raising such funds.” Generally, there are two types in the US presidency – one kind thinks globally while another kind focuses only on the USA; and Donald Trump belongs to this second group so far as my knowledge goes, said Momen. He said: “As a result most crucial issues like climate change will not be in his priority focus, which will ultimately affect Bangladesh badly in the days ahead.” Asked about the possibility of regaining the GSP facilities in the US market, Dr Momen categorically said: “The GSP issue is no more a major concern for us as Bangladesh will become a middle income country by 2021.” Explaining the reasons behind the defeat of the Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton, Momen said: “Hillary has worked in a traditional way with a global focus while Donald Trump has concentrated his focus only on the USA to attract the native voters.’ “His slogan was ‘Save the Country’ which has created huge impact among the people and largely motivated the US voters to cast their votes in favour of Donald Trump.”
