Two killed in Jhenaidah ‘gunfight’

Two suspected criminals were killed in a ‘gunfight’ between their cohorts and police in Jhenaidah town in the early hours of Tuesday. The deceased were identified as Zohurul Islam, ameer of Jhenaidah municipality unit Jamaat-e-Islam of Bangladesh and Tariq Hasan Sabuj, advisor of Shibir. Both of them were residents of Jhenaidah town. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ajbahar Ali said: “A gang of miscreants riding on three motorcycles hurled bombs and fired bullets at a patrolling police team when police challenged them in Bhutiargati area that forced police to take retaliation ensuing a gun battle. “Two of the miscreants and three police constables were injured in the gunfight.” Other members of the gang managed to flee the scene and later on police recovered two guns, bullets and five hand-made bombs from the spot, added the ASP. The injured were taken to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital where on duty doctors declared two miscreants dead. On September 2, a suspected robber was killed in an alleged gunfight with police in Pirojpur Koraitola area, Kaliganj upazila. Shahidul Islam Poca, 43, died during an alleged exchange of fires between robbers and RAB in Folshi area on August 12.
