Fire guts two shops at Gazipur market

Fire fighters doused the blaze after a hectic effort of an hour, said Zihad, station officer of Mawna Fire Service. The businessmen at the market informed the fire service when they noticed smoke coming out from a shop named Sur Bitan, said SM Abul Kalam Azad, owner of the market and also president of Sreepur Upazila Sramik Dal - a BNP affiliated workers’ association. The fire might have originated from electric short-circuit, says Zihad. Shafikul Islam, proprietor of Sur Bitan, said his shop remained closed for last two days. “Being informed, I rushed to the market and found the gutted shop, which,” he said. He estimated the damage at Tk3 lakh. Mokbul Hossain, proprietor of another damaged shop Sur Jhankar, said the fire spread from the adjacent shop Sur Bitan and engulfed his shop soon, causing a loss of Tk2.5 lakh.
