Newborn rescued from burial brought to Dhaka

The infant was rushed to Jahid Memorial Child Hospital in the upazila, the same hospital where she was born and pronounced dead. “She needs to be sent to Dhaka for better treatment if her condition does not improve,” said Dr Abdullahish Abu Sayad, the hospital paediatrician attending her. As her condition remained severe, she was brought to Dhaka from Faridpur on a private helicopter around 5:25pm on Saturday and was admitted to Square Hospital. Earlier, her parents – local cricketer Nazmul Huda Mithu and lawyer Naznin Akhter Popy – were compelled to bury her as the physician concerned declared her dead two hours after birth. The physician, Dr Rezia Alam, claimed that the baby had no pulse. Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Ommey Salma Tanzia said that they were providing assistance to the newborn and her family. “We will bear the costs of her treatment, if necessary,” she said. Both the hospital authorities and the district civil surgeon have launched separate investigation on the matter that created much hype.
