Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a Tk4,068 crore project to construct two container jetties and develop supporting infrastructure to expand and modernise Mongla Port.

He laid the foundation stone at a ceremony in Mongla, Bagerhat, at 11:15am, said Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony.

The project aims to expand the port's capacity and modernise its facilities through the construction of two container jetties and the development of associated infrastructure.

Earlier in the morning, the Prime Minister arrived in Mongla by helicopter around 9:50am to attend a series of programmes as part of his daylong visit to Bagerhat and Khulna.

After the arrival, Tarique attended the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Invest Bangladesh and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) on economic and infrastructure cooperation in Mongla.

Under the MoU, the two sides will explore investment opportunities in key sectors, including energy, industrial infrastructure, green infrastructure, transport, logistics and human resource development.
