Home minister: Initiative taken to bring Jungle Salimpur under law and order

A police academy and Chittagong Central Jail are planned for the area as part of the initiative

An initiative has been taken to bring Jungle Salimpur in Chittagong under good governance and discipline, with plans to establish a police academy and relocate Chittagong Central Jail there, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said.

He made the remarks to journalists at the Secretariat around 3:00pm on Thursday, after a meeting titled “Meeting for the Overall Improvement of Law and Order in Jungle Salimpur, Chittagong.”

The home minister said a decision had been made to establish a police academy in Jungle Salimpur, modeled on Sarda. In addition, 72 acres of land have been acquired in the area to relocate Chittagong Central Jail.

He said government land, hill-category land and khas (state-owned) land in Jungle Salimpur would be brought under good governance. Space has also been allocated for various forces to ensure the permanent presence of law enforcement agencies there.

Highlighting several decisions of the inter-ministerial meeting, Salahuddin said the meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), the Divisional Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong, as well as top officials of law enforcement agencies.

Representatives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Armed Police Battalion, Coast Guard and SRB also took part in the meeting.

Salahuddin said the progress of the road network currently being built in Jungle Salimpur was also reviewed at the meeting. Road construction is moving forward in coordination with the Armed Forces Division and under the leadership of the Engineering Construction Battalion (ECB).

The home minister said government land in several mouzas of Jungle Salimpur would be brought under integrated management. A decision has been made to establish a police academy there modeled on Sarda, and the work of identifying land for it is under way.

He said 72 acres of land had been acquired in Jungle Salimpur to relocate Chittagong Central Jail. The jail will be moved to the area beside the Bayezid Link Road.

The home minister also said decisions would be made on the rehabilitation of those who have settled illegally in various parts of Jungle Salimpur. Measures would also be taken regarding the operation of educational and other institutions there.

He said the area would be brought under order by bringing everything under good governance and freeing it from its past as a haven for terror.

The home minister added that, in addition to the police, space had been allocated for the BGB, SRB and Armed Police Battalion to ensure their presence in Jungle Salimpur.

The respective forces will construct facilities on these sites to ensure good governance and law and order in the area.

He said development, government land management, rehabilitation, institutional management and law and order in Jungle Salimpur would be implemented in a coordinated manner.
