A young man was shot and injured by unidentified assailants in Khulna on Wednesday morning.
The incident took place around 6:30am near the second gate of BL College under Daulatpur police station.
Police and locals said the injured man, identified as Mahidul Islam, works cleaning vehicles at an oil depot behind BL College.
He had gone to a hotel near the college’s second gate for breakfast around 6:30am when around 10 youths surrounded him and opened fire. A bullet struck him in the abdomen.
Locals took Mahidul to Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Daulatpur police station Sub-Inspector Md Abdur Razzak said police visited the scene after being informed of the incident.
“We are speaking to the injured man at the hospital to understand what happened. We are also trying to collect CCTV footage from the area,” he said.
Mahidul is the son of Shawkat Khan of Bangaon village in Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj.
The shooting comes less than two days after Aktar Dhali was shot dead in Rupsa, further fuelling concerns over law and order in Khulna.
According to Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP), 38 people have been killed in the city so far this year, with 23 murder cases filed.
Police said they have solved 19 of those cases and arrested 81 people.
A total of 17 cases are under investigation, and two are pending trial.
Police attributed nine killings to family or personal disputes, seven to drugs disputes, two to easy-bike theft, two to unknown causes and one to mob beating over suspicion of theft.
In 2025, at least 39 people were killed in the city and 37 murder cases were filed. Police said they solved 36 cases and arrested 144 people.
Drug dealing and turf disputes accounted for 18 of the killings, while 14 resulted from family or personal conflicts, three from attempts to steal easy-bikes and two from unknown causes.
According to Khulna District Police, 33 murder cases were filed across the district between January and September this year. Seven of the killings involved firearms.
Of the 33 cases filed across the district’s nine police stations, 11 were linked to family disputes, three to drugs, three to robbery or theft, two to turf disputes and two to financial disputes. One case involved an attack on government employees.
Police said they have solved 25 of the 33 cases.
