State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has highlighted Bangladesh's recently launched women-only Pink Bus Service at a UN roundtable, citing it as a measure to make public transport safer for women.
She referred to the service while addressing a ministerial roundtable on technology-facilitated violence against women and girls at UN headquarters in New York on September 23, according to a Foreign Ministry press release issued here on Friday.
Shama outlined Bangladesh's legal and institutional measures to prevent violence against women and girls, including faster investigations and trials, legal aid, safe shelter, rehabilitation and psychosocial support.
She also described the Dhaka Dialogue, a Bangladesh-led initiative to develop voluntary guidelines for preventing, investigating and addressing digital harassment, and invited UN member states to join its Group of Friends.
Referring to women affected by conflict, Shama spoke of Bangladesh's contributions to UN peacekeeping and its support for Rohingya women and girls sheltered in the country.
Convened by Croatia and UN Women on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, the roundtable discussed digital threats including harassment, defamation, impersonation and abuse enabled by artificial intelligence.
