The government has raised the price of low-tier cigarettes again, setting the minimum maximum retail price (MRP) for a pack of 10 cigarettes at Tk65, up from Tk62.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) announced the new price in a gazette notification signed by acting NBR Chairman Ahsan Habib on Thursday.
According to the notification, the price of low-tier cigarettes has been increased by Tk3, while prices for cigarettes in other tiers remain unchanged.
Under the new pricing structure, the MRP for 10 cigarettes remains Tk92 for the medium tier, Tk160 for the high tier, and Tk210 or more for the premium tier.
Earlier, the government increased cigarette prices across all tiers in the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
At the time, the price of a 10-stick pack of low-tier cigarettes was raised from Tk60 to Tk62. Prices for medium-tier cigarettes were increased from Tk80 to Tk92, high-tier cigarettes from Tk140 to Tk160, and premium cigarettes from Tk185 to Tk210 or more.
However, the government later moved to raise the price of low-tier cigarettes further. The proposal was recently approved by the Cabinet, leading to Thursday’s NBR notification.
As a result, the price of low-tier cigarettes has increased for the second time in the current fiscal year—from Tk60 to Tk62 in the budget and now by another Tk3 to Tk65.
This means low-tier cigarettes are the only category whose price has been increased again after the budget announcement, while the prices of the other three tiers remain at their budget-set levels.
