BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected president with 255 votes, defeating 11-party alliance candidate Oli Ahmed, who secured 88 votes.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin declared Mirza Fakhrul the winner on Thursday afternoon.
Voting began at 2:00pm in the session hall of the National Parliament Bhaban at around 2:00pm.
Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram cast the first ballot, followed by Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and ruling-party candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
BNP lawmaker Mirza Abbas could not vote due to illness and medical treatment.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin conducted the election as the returning officer, assisted by officials from the Election Commission and Parliament Secretariat.
The last contested presidential election was held on October 8, 1991. Since then, no voting was required in 1996, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2013, 2018 and 2023 as the elections had only one candidate.
With the BNP holding a two-thirds majority in parliament, Mirza Fakhrul is widely expected to win. However, the main focus of political interest is on the vote tally of the two candidates.
Ruling-party Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said the winner will take oath as president at Bangabhaban at 7:30pm on Friday.
