Three major rivers in Bandarban continued to flow above the danger level on Tuesday following heavy rainfall and flash floods from upstream hills, leaving over 100 tourists stranded in remote parts of Thanchi upazila.
The water levels of the Sangu, Matamuhuri, and Bakkhali rivers have risen above the danger mark, inundating low-lying areas in Bandarban town and disrupting transport.
River communication with Thanchi and Ruma upazilas has remained suspended due to the swollen rivers, while road transport has also been disrupted after landslides blocked several stretches of roads connecting Bandarban with the two upazilas.
More than 100 tourists are still stranded at three tourist destinations in the remote areas of Thanchi as adverse weather conditions continue to hamper rescue and transportation.
In view of the worsening weather and the risk of landslides, the district administration has imposed a ban on tourist travel to all tourist destinations in Bandarban until Friday.
The restriction was announced through a public notice signed by Deputy Commissioner Md Saniul Ferdous on Monday night.
The deputy commissioner said authorities are conducting awareness campaigns through loudspeakers in landslide-prone areas to prevent casualties.
He also said that 220 cyclone and flood shelters have been kept ready to accommodate people if needed.
The Health Department has prepared eight medical teams to provide emergency healthcare services in the affected areas.
The district administration has urged residents and visitors to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel until the weather improves.
