Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said there have been various discussions about the exact number of people killed in the July mass uprising, but according to his estimate, at least 2,000 people were killed and more than 30,000 injured.

According to the United Nations, 60 children also lost their lives. He said the government will ensure justice for every killing under existing laws.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a memorial event for those killed in the July mass uprising held at the China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital on Saturday.

The event, organized by the central committees of “July 24 Shaheed Families” and “Amra July Joddha,” was attended by injured July fighters and family members of the martyrs.

The session was chaired by State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Engineer Ishraque Hossain. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Sumon, Law Minister Asaduzzaman, and Chief Whip of Parliament Nurul Islam Moni also spoke as special guests.

The prime minister said that proper recognition will be given to those who sacrificed their lives to free the country from fascism.

Highlighting various injustices and atrocities of the previous Sheikh Hasina government, he said almost every person present at the event had suffered physical and mental abuse in the past. He also claimed that a large number of people were harassed in false cases, and that as many as 6 million BNP leaders and activists were forced to leave their homes due to such cases.

Tarique Rahman said the deceased and oppressed had dreamed of establishing justice in the country, urging all to avoid injustice in the name of justice.

He added that the government would ensure fair trials, saying justice may take time but will be carried out carefully under full legal procedures without any biased or questionable process.
