Four workers die while cleaning septic tanks in Chittagong

Police said the deaths in both incidents were primarily caused by exposure to toxic gas accumulated inside the septic tanks

Four workers died in two separate incidents while cleaning septic tanks in Chittagong city and Raozan upazila on Friday.

In Raozan, two construction workers died after entering a septic tank at an under-construction house owned by a man known as Ratan Doctor in Jhikuti Para of Chowdhuryhat area under Noapara Union.

The deceased were identified as Pradip Das of Kochukhain area in Noapara Union and Samiran Das of Kadhurkhil area in Boalkhali upazila.

According to locals, Pradip entered the septic tank around 12:30 pm and fell ill after inhaling toxic gas accumulated inside. Samiran Das also entered the septic tank in an attempt to rescue him, but was overcome by the toxic gas and fell unconscious. Being informed, fire service personnel recovered the two workers and rushed them to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

Confirming the incident, Raozan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jasim Uddin said the two construction workers died while working inside the septic tank.

In a separate incident in Chittagong city, two workers died after entering a septic tank in Dhaniyalapara under Double Mooring Police Station around 2:30 pm.

The victims were identified as Sakib, 25, and Hridoy, 24, both residents of Noakhali district.

Double Mooring Police Station OC Shahinur Alam said the two workers had entered a septic tank to clean it at a building owned by Nurul Huda. They were exposed to toxic gas trapped inside the tank and became unconscious.

They were later rescued and taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead.

Police said the deaths in both incidents were primarily caused by exposure to toxic gas accumulated inside the septic tanks. Further legal procedures are underway.
