A 21-year-old motorcyclist who was critically injured in a premeditated brick attack in the capital's Kafrul area died on Monday morning after battling for life for 13 days.
The deceased, Sajid Chowdhury Rafi, succumbed to his injuries around 7am while undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kafrul Police Station Md Sazzad Hossain.
Rafi's uncle Md Nur Hossain Chowdhury said Rafi was first taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital after the attack in the early hours of June 9. He was shifted to the DMCH the following day and remained under treatment for nearly two weeks in the ICU before succumbing to his injuries.
Police said the attack took place on June 9 on Ibrahimpur Road, about 100 yards east of the Purba Shewrapara bus stand in Kafrul.
Rafi was returning home on his motorcycle when the attackers struck him on the right side of his head with a brick, causing him to lose control and crash onto the road.
The incident later went viral on social media, prompting an extensive investigation by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) using CCTV footage and information technology-based analysis.
It identified four suspects involved in the attack: Md Parvez, Faisal alias Kalu, Anwar Hossain Babu and Amin. Of them, the former three have already been arrested.
Police said Parvez had previously lived as a tenant in Rafi's house, leading to their acquaintance. Later, disputes emerged after Parvez and his associates allegedly became involved in drug dealing in the area.
The day before the attack, an argument reportedly broke out between Rafi and suspects Parvez and Kalu. Police said the suspects later threatened Rafi and lay in wait for him in Purba Shewrapara.
When Rafi arrived on his motorcycle, Amin allegedly attempted to block his path. As he continued riding, Parvez struck him in the head with a brick.
