A case has been filed over alleged negligence following the deaths of six newborns at Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in the capital’s Moghbazar area.
The case was filed with Ramna Police Station by the family of one of the deceased infants, police said on Thursday.
Confirming the matter, Ramna Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ashiq Iqbal said the case was filed on Wednesday night, and an investigation into the incident is underway.
Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Ramna Division Sheikh Zahidul Islam said the case was filed over allegations of negligence leading to the deaths of the newborns.
Earlier, the bodies of the six newborns were handed over to their families on Wednesday night. Police said the families declined autopsies as the infants were between one and three days old. The bodies were later released following written requests from the families.
The six newborns died in the hospital’s post-delivery ward early Wednesday.
Relatives alleged that the deaths were caused by mismanagement in the ward and the air-conditioning system being switched off. However, hospital authorities did not provide any official explanation regarding the cause of the deaths despite briefing reporters.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the incident. The committee has been asked to submit its report within three working days.
