The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority has issued a stern warning that strict action will be taken against public transport drivers who exceed prescribed working hours.
In a cautionary notice released from its headquarters on Saturday, the BRTA said violators could face cancellation of their driving licences as well as the registration of their vehicles.
According to the notice, prolonged driving without adequate rest often leads to fatigue, drowsiness, or sleep, increasing the risk of drivers losing control and causing road accidents. Such incidents can result in casualties among drivers, helpers, passengers, and pedestrians.
Under existing motor vehicle laws, a driver may operate a vehicle for a maximum of five consecutive hours, after which a break of at least 30 minutes is mandatory. Following the break, the driver may continue for up to three additional hours, bringing the daily limit to eight hours. The weekly maximum working time is set at 48 hours.
The BRTA warned that failure to comply with these regulations could result in strict punitive measures, including cancellation of driving licences and vehicle registrations.
The authority also urged transport owners and drivers to strictly adhere to the prescribed working hours to help prevent road accidents.
