After more than four hours of blockade, protesters vacated the Mirpur-10 Gol Chattar area on Friday at around 7:20 pm following a request from police.
Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Model Police Station Hafizur Rahman confirmed the matter, saying, “The blockaders left the area around 7:20 pm.”
The protest erupted shortly after Friday prayers, with demonstrators demanding swift justice over the rape and murder of the seven-year-old girl.
Agitated locals blocked the Mirpur-10 Gol Chattar, bringing traffic on the busy corridor to a near standstill. As the hours passed, congestion worsened, causing severe suffering for commuters and residents in the surrounding areas.
Law enforcement agencies made repeated attempts to disperse the crowd from the afternoon, tightening security in the area and urging protesters to clear the roadway. Eventually, the demonstrators withdrew in response to continued police requests.
The victim’s mutilated body was recovered from a flat in Pallabi on the morning of May 19.
Police later recovered her severed head from a bathroom in the flat. A murder case was subsequently filed with Pallabi Police Station.
Police initially detained the wife of the prime accused, Sohel Rana, identified as Swapna Akhter.
Later, Sohel Rana was arrested, and he reportedly gave a confessional statement in court, admitting to the rape and murder of the child.
Earlier on Thursday night, Tarique Rahman visited the slain girl’s family home and assured them of swift justice.
