Salahuddin Ahmed has stated that law enforcement agencies are acting in accordance with the law regarding individuals previously identified as top criminals who have been released on bail, warning that any further involvement in criminal activity will be subject to investigation and legal action.
He made the remarks on Monday afternoon while speaking to journalists after the inaugural meeting of the National Committee on Coordination, Management, and Law and Order related to forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals in the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Home Minister noted that several high-profile accused individuals have been granted bail following court decisions after August 5, emphasizing that the authority to grant bail lies solely with the judiciary. However, he added that if any of those released are implicated in new criminal activities, law enforcement agencies will proceed based on formal complaints and cases.
He stressed that the law applies equally to all citizens, stating that regardless of whether an individual is a notorious offender or an ordinary person, acts such as murder are punishable offenses. Any case filed will be investigated, and those found responsible will be brought under legal proceedings.
Addressing the broader law and order situation, the minister said the government is working to restore stability following a prolonged period of decline. He added that efforts are underway to normalize administrative functions after the formation of a democratically elected government.
In response to a question about a police station in Comilla that was reportedly surrounded for several hours following the arrest of a BNP leader, he said the incident is under investigation and that authorities managed to bring the situation under control in accordance with the law.
On administrative matters within the police force, the minister described transfers, promotions, recruitment, and compulsory retirements as routine functions of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
He said such decisions are taken following established legal procedures, and that new positions may be created if necessary with approval from the Ministry of Public Administration.
He further explained that cases involving compulsory retirement are reviewed by an internal committee within the ministry, which examines allegations and makes decisions in line with existing rules and regulations.
