Security alert: Tightened measures over sabotage fears at key installations

The alert follows intelligence gathered from a recently arrested suspect, Istiak Ahmed Sami, also known as Abu Bakkar and Abu Mohammad

Update : 25 Apr 2026, 08:45 PM
Authorities in Bangladesh have issued directives to strengthen security at key installations across the country amid concerns over potential sabotage by supporters of a banned extremist group.

According to official sources, the Police Headquarters recently sent instructions to all units—including Range Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), Metropolitan Police Commissioners, and District Superintendents—to enhance vigilance and security measures nationwide.

The alert follows intelligence gathered from a recently arrested suspect, Istiak Ahmed Sami, also known as Abu Bakkar and Abu Mohammad. Reports indicate that he maintained regular contact with two dismissed members of a security force, raising serious concerns among law enforcement agencies.

Intelligence inputs suggest that the group may be planning attacks on critical national sites, including the National Parliament building, law enforcement facilities and personnel, places of worship, recreational centres, and key public areas such as Shahbagh.

Authorities have warned that potential attacks could involve explosives as well as locally made sharp weapons or firearms. There are also indications that the group might attempt to target arms depots of various security forces.

Law enforcement agencies consider the individuals involved to pose a high risk to national security.

In response, relevant authorities have been instructed to intensify surveillance, strengthen security arrangements at vulnerable locations, and take legal action against any suspects.

Officials have confirmed that intelligence monitoring has already been increased, and efforts are underway to identify those involved and bring them swiftly under the law to prevent any possible acts of sabotage.
