Janaza of former law minister Shafique Ahmed held at Supreme Court premises

Shafique Ahmed served as a technocrat law minister during the Awami League government from 2009 to 2014

The namz-e-janaza of former law minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed was held at the Supreme Court premises in Dhaka on Monday.

The namaz-e-janaza took place at the Inner Garden of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh at 2pm, led by Maulana Mufti Abu Zafar, imam of the Supreme Court Bar Association mosque.

Leaders and members of the legal community, cutting across political affiliations, attended the janaza. Among them were Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman, judges of the Appellate Division and High Court Division, Attorney General Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, the deceased’s son Barrister Mahbub Shafiq, leaders of the Supreme Court Bar Association, the registrar general, and lawyers of the apex court.

Floral tributes were paid to the deceased following the funeral prayer.

Barrister Shafique Ahmed, a senior Supreme Court lawyer and former minister of law, justice and parliamentary affairs, died at around 6pm on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Medical Hospital in the capital. He was 88.

He had been admitted to hospital on April 11 with liver complications.

Shafique Ahmed served as a technocrat law minister during the Awami League government from 2009 to 2014. He also held key positions as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and vice chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council.

His body will be kept at the Central Shaheed Minar from 3pm to 4pm for public homage, before being laid to rest at Azimpur Graveyard.
