'Plans underway to launch Bogra STOL airport, Lalmonirhat airport'

She said that a feasibility study and planning have been completed to transform Syedpur Airport into a regional airport

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita on Tuesday said that the government has a plan to operate Bogra STOL airport and Lalmonirhat airport as domestic airports.

The minister came up with the statement during a question-and-answer session in the 13th National Parliament, responding to a query from Jamalpur-2 MP AE Sultan Mahmud Babu.

She said that a feasibility study and planning have been completed to transform Syedpur Airport into a regional airport, which will include the construction of an international-standard terminal, runway expansion, and other necessary infrastructure developments.

The minister also confirmed that under the annual procurement plan of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, development, modernization, and maintenance work is ongoing at all domestic airports across the country.

Highlighting ongoing projects aimed at improving domestic airports in line with national development goals, the minister listed the following:

a. Cox’s Bazar airport runway expansion project –The actual progress of the project so far is 90.33%

b. Construction of international passenger terminal at Cox’s Bazar Airport – 97.10% physically completed.

c. Cox’s Bazar Airport development (Phase 2) consulting services – Design Phase project – 35.04% physically completed.

d. Asphalt concrete overlay projects on runways at Jassore Airport, Syedpur Airport, and Shah Makhdum Airport in Rajshahi – 70.25% physically completed.

The minister emphasized that these initiatives are part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance domestic air connectivity and support regional development.
