Shishir Manir: Elected parliament may face legal challenges if referendum cancelled

He urges the government to withdraw its decision to cancel the ordinances

Update : 30 Mar 2026, 04:47 PM

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami central executive committee member and senior Supreme Court lawyer Shishir Manir on Monday said cancelling the referendum could create legal challenges for the elected parliament.

He made the remarks at a press conference held by Jamaat lawyers in front of the High Court Annex Building in Dhaka.

Manir said the government does not want to implement more than 20 ordinances, including those on enforced disappearance prevention, Anti-Corruption Commission reforms, the Human Rights Commission, and the appointment of Supreme Court judges. “These ordinances had raised hopes of reform among the people,” he said.

He urged the government to withdraw its decision to cancel the ordinances.

Manir also said there was consensus among all political parties on 30 issues under the National Consensus Commission formed by the interim government.

He added that the BNP was also delaying acceptance of those issues.
