Middle East tension: 858 flights cancelled at Dhaka airport

Civil aviation authorities say cancellations began after several countries closed their airspace on February 28

A total of 858 flights have been cancelled from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport so far due to the security situation in the Middle East, officials said.

The cancellations cover flights from February 28 to noon on Sunday.

Another 18 flights were cancelled until noon on Monday, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).

Muhammad Kawsar Mahmud, an official of the CAAB public relations department, told the media on Sunday evening that Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan closed their airspace on February 28 because of the situation in the Middle East.

He said flight cancellations from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport began after the closures and are continuing.
