Mahbuba Rahman, the celebrated singer whose voice became inseparable from Bangladesh’s first talkie "Mukh O Mukhosh", and an Ekushey Padak recipient, has passed away.
She passed away at around 6:15pm on Thursday, while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital. She had long been suffering from age-related complications.
Mahbuba Rahman was among the most recognisable voices on radio and in films from the 1950s to the 1970s. Known for her effortless command over both folk and modern songs, she helped shape an era of Bangla music.
Her musical journey began in 1947 at the Dhaka station of All India Radio.
Nearly a decade later, her song "Moner Bone Dola Lage," for Mukh O Mukhosh (1956), etched her name into history, becoming one of the defining tracks of the country’s first sound film.
Her songs in Zahir Raihan’s "Kokhono Asheni"—including "Nirala Rater Prothom Prohore" and "Tomake Bhalobeshe Obosheshe Ki Pelam"—remain etched in the hearts of listeners to this day.
She also lent her voice to numerous timeless films, including "Asia", "E Desh Tomar Amar", "Nawab Sirajuddaula", and "Sat Bhai Champa".
