Four of a family among 5 killed in Comilla road crash

The accident took place near Kalakachua area in Burichang Upazila on Dhaka-Chittagong highway around 6:00pm

Five people, including four members of a family, were killed and another injured as a bus ran over a private car on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Comilla on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Momin,50, a resident of the Chatarpaiya area in Sonaimuri upazila of Noakhali, his wife Jharna Begum, 40, their daughter Labiba Akter,18 and their son Saif, 7. The driver of the private car Jamal Hossain, 52, hailed from Barisal district.

Another member of the family, 12-year-old Abrar Hossain, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Mainamati General Hospital, located within the Comilla Cantonment.

The incident took place in front of East Zone Filling Station at Kalakachua in Burichang Upazila on Dhaka-Chittagong highway around 6:00pm.

Officer-in-Charge of Mainamati Highway Police Station Abdul Momin confirmed the incident to Dhaka Tribune.

According to highway police and locals, a Starline Paribahan bus, reportedly running at high speed, struck the right side of the car with significant force. The impact crushed the vehicle, leaving the driver dead on the spot.

The critically injured passengers of the private car were rushed to a nearby hospital where on-duty doctor declared four of them dead. Police have launched an investigation into the accident.

OC Abdul Momin stated, “The bus that collided with the private car has been seized. However, the driver and his assistant managed to flee the scene”.

Necessary legal action will be taken in connection with the incident. The process of handing over the deceased to their family is ongoing, he added.
