Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has called for enhanced cooperation from China in Bangladesh’s health sector, praising Beijing’s ongoing support and urging further collaboration.
The minister sought assistance in supplying diagnostic kits and medical equipment, as well as arranging accommodation facilities for physicians and researchers at Bangladesh Medical University. He also expressed hope that China would honor its commitment to support the construction of a proposed 1,000-bed hospital in Bangladesh.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen at the Health Ministry conference room at the Secretariat on Monday.
State Minister for Health Dr MA Muhit, Health Secretary (Routine Charge) Khorshed Alam, and Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka Li Shaopeng were also present at the meeting.
The Chinese ambassador assured that China would not hesitate to assist in the construction of the proposed 1,000-bed hospital, whether it is established as a general or specialized facility.
He noted that Chinese medical teams had previously arrived in Bangladesh to support treatment efforts in emergency situations, including after the aircraft crash at Milestone School. He added that China has provided 82 pieces of equipment to a robotic rehabilitation centre and is offering training opportunities in China for Bangladeshi medical staff.
Ambassador Yao also expressed interest in supporting accommodation arrangements for doctors and researchers engaged in higher studies.
During the meeting, State Minister Dr Muhit said it would be reasonable to establish the proposed 1,000-bed hospital in northern Bangladesh, considering the region’s relative underdevelopment and longstanding neglect.
