Salahuddin calls for Awami League's trial as a party

Asked about the composition of the next cabinet, he said people would have to wait a little longer

Update : 13 Feb 2026, 06:55 PM

Salahuddin Ahmed, a standing committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), said the people of Bangladesh know that the election was highly inclusive and that there is no need for him to describe the misdeeds of the Awami League, as the public rejected the party in August 2024.

“They are now being brought to justice. Although investigations against Awami League leaders are still ongoing, I hope the prosecution will file charges against the Awami League as a party,” he added.

He added that BNP has always demanded the extradition of Sheikh Hasina in accordance with the law.

He noted that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

“We urge the Indian government to send her back so that she can face trial,” he said.

Salahuddin made the comments on Friday afternoon while responding to journalists in front of the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka.

Salahuddin also said that Bangladesh would maintain friendly relations with all countries, including neighbouring states, based on equality, self-respect and mutual respect.

Asked about the composition of the next cabinet, he said people would have to wait a little longer.

He further said they expect the Election Commission of Bangladesh to formally announce the election results through a gazette notification by Friday afternoon, after which the countdown will begin.

The swearing-in of members of parliament will be carried out in accordance with constitutional procedures.
