Chief Adviser of the interim government Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday said the people played an active role in determining the country’s future by exercising their constitutional rights in the 13th National Parliament election and the referendum on the implementation of the July National Charter.

Speaking after voting concluded, Yunus said the peaceful, orderly and festive conduct of the polls reflected the nation’s firm commitment to democracy.

“The spontaneous participation of voters, the responsible conduct of political parties, the restraint of candidates and the professionalism of all institutions related to the election—this combined effort has proven that our commitment to democracy remains firm,” he said. “By exercising their constitutional rights, the people have played an active role in determining the future of the country.”

The chief adviser extended heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to the entire nation for the successful completion of the election and the referendum.

He expressed special thanks to the Election Commission, law enforcement agencies, the armed forces, the administration, observer teams, media workers and all officials and employees involved in the voting process.

“It is due to their dedication and hard work that this vast democratic exercise has been successfully completed,” he said.

Calling for post-election harmony, Yunus urged political parties and candidates to uphold democratic decency, tolerance and mutual respect even after the announcement of the final results.

“Differences of opinion will exist, but in the national interest we must remain united,” he said.

Yunus said Bangladesh had once again proven that the people are the source of all power and pledged to move forward collectively in building an accountable, inclusive and justice-based state.

Describing the polls as a moment of national celebration, he said the election was “a great joy and a festival” and marked the beginning of “an unprecedented journey of a new Bangladesh.”

He also termed it the most peaceful and festive election in the country’s history, adding, “If this continuity can be maintained, our democracy will reach the pinnacle of excellence.”

“Let us work together in this journey to strengthen democracy,” he said.
